Financial metrics weren’t accurate. Annual recurring revenue included one-off income and even duplicate entries. Revenue wasn’t accrued consistently across cycles, which made it hard to explain performance over time. Financial data not detailed enough to work out the unit economics. Most of the metrics they tracked were wrong.
The company was growing 50% YoY, but the MRR schedule was unreliable. Yet, that was the key number they had to report to investors. The pressure on the two co-founders was building. Metrics appeared differently depending on which spreadsheet you looked at.
The board was getting increasingly frustrated. Each team had its own spreadsheet. The founder had to collect all the data, copy and paste it into a deck, and hope it matched up before every board meeting.
One of the founders said: “Half the time before a board meeting goes into just getting the numbers to match - it’s stressful and makes us look unprepared.”
